In the past, initial registration for the Pin Event was $150. For that money attendees last year got a $30 Gift Card and 9 gift pins, along with the opportunity to purchase other pins via the RSP methodology. No free guests. Everyone who enters the event must have paid the $150 registration fee. They did do a public trading day on Sunday last year and you did not need to register to go to that. I don’t know if they will be doing that again or not.
You certainly don’t need to worry about showing up alone. Pin people tend to be extremely friendly and by the end of the event I predict you will have lots of new pin friends you will be trading with for years to come. There is a large room set aside for trading but the majority of attendees stand in line to trade off the boards in the hopes of getting great Artist Proof, Pre-Production, or unreleased pins. Since the lines are VERY long you’ll have an hour to chat with your line neighbors and get to know them.
The event is open all day but people come and go all the time. Many people leave for lunch although Disney did offer sandwiches you could order and pay for at the time of registration so you wouldn’t have to leave the building if you didn’t want to. There are a few activities that are scheduled (i.e. games, auctions, announcements) but participation is voluntary.
